Montfort is a 13th century spur castle located above the perennial stream of Wadi al-Qarn/Nahal Kzev.
The castle was built by the Teutonic Order starting in 1226/7, and fell to the Mamluk sultan Baybars in June 1271 and destroyed. The defences are concentrated at the most vulnerable eastern side where the spur joins the hill. As the top of the spur is quite narrow, the main residential buildings are arranged in sequence along the top of the ridge. On the northern and western sides, there are great remains of an outer defensive wall.
The Montfort Castle Project (MCP) was established by professor Adrian Boas in 2006, and since 2019 it is headed by Dr. Rabei Khamisy.
