The Laboratory for Ancient Food Processing Technologies specializes in the analysis of ground stone tool assemblages recovered from archaeological excavations ranging from prehistoric to historic periods in Israel. Our in-depth studies, carried out in the laboratory and in collaboration with other research institutions in Israel and abroad, are aimed at increasing our understanding of the wide range of tools used in a variety of tasks in the past and viewing these within a wider context of human activities, technological achievements and beliefs.

Use-Wear Analysis Laboratory
The first use-wear analysis laboratory in Israel has been recently established at the Zinman Institute of Archaeology, University of Haifa, headed by Iris Groman-Yaroslavski. The laboratory specializes in microscopic use-wear analysis and experimental archaeology, and provides functional analysis of archaeological objects. Research focuses in reconstructing biographies of objects by investigating manufacture techniques, use modes, hafting systems and the identification of worked materials.

Conservation Laboratory
Established in 2011, the Zinman Institute of Archaeology’s conservation laboratory specializes in the conservation and restoration of archaeological finds. The laboratory is headed by Dr. Alexander Iermolin, an archaeologist and master conservator. The laboratory provides services to archaeological delegations from Israel and abroad, as well as to museums, public and governmental institutions, individual researchers, and registered antiquities collectors.

The Analytical Laboratory for Archaeological Materials
The Analytical Laboratory for Archaeological Materials in University of Haifa, headed by Prof. Sariel Shalev is located in the Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences and working in close cooperation with the scholars from the Department of Archaeology and from the Recanati Institute for Maritime Studies.
