Laboratory for Ancient Food Processing Technologies

The Laboratory for Ancient Food Processing Technologies (LAFPT) in the Zinman Institute of Archaeology, University of Haifa was established in 2011 and since then, it is directed by Prof. Danny Rosenberg and has many associated graduate and undergraduate students. The laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach to the analysis of stone tools and other artifacts and integrates new documentation and analytical methodologies. Our lab is an international center of knowledge for ground stone tools research, and we are engaged in multiple collaborations with international scholars, working with us on a wide-range of ground stone tool-related studies, integrating the natural and social sciences.

The lab studies and publications incorporate ground stone tool assemblages from sites spanning different periods from prehistory through historical periods, documenting the evolution of ground stone tool technologies and food processing techniques and their contribution and involvement in human life. Our studies include research and the final publications of many ground stone tool reports for the Israel Antiquities Authority and other universities and institutions in Israel and abroad, as well as focused thematic studies (provenance, trade and exchange, cultic use, long-term trends in food processing and others). Through this, we advance the documentation of tools and assemblages, morphometric studies, geochemical provenance studies, micro- and macroscopic use-wear analysis, technological research focusing on ground stone tools production and discard patterns and the extraction and analysis of ancient residues from ground stone tools.
